Without setting goals or objectives, life becomes a series of chaotic happenings you don’t control. You become the plaything of coincidence. Accomplishments like sending someone to the moon, inventing the iPod etcetera are the result of a goal that was set at some point. A vision that was charted and realized.

SMART Goals Specific-Measurable- Achievable-realistic -timely

It is easy to get dragged into acronyms these days, but this is one applies to so much in our lives. That is specific-measurable-achievable-realistic-timely are the better descriptions to work. A key thing to remember is that each description on its own has no power at all, but using them together will bring huge benefits.

How to become smart in setting up goals?

Paul J. Meyer, businessman, author, and founder of Success Motivation International, describes the characteristics of SMART goals in his 2003 book, “ Attitude Is Everything: If You Want to Succeed Above and Beyond.” We’ll expand on his definitions to explore how to create, develop and achieve your goal.

1. Specific

Goals setting can be made specific by answering five questions that start with ‘w’ when it becomes specific it can be concentrated and moreover there is a significantly greater chance of being accomplished.

1.Who: Who is involved in this goal?

2.What: What do I want to accomplish?

3.Where: Where is this goal to be achieved?

4.When: When do I want to achieve this goal?

5.Why: Why do I want to achieve this goal?

2. Measurable

Whenever we are on track to achieve a task it must be measurable. It will help to determine the progress and track the achievement that we have set. The measurable criteria will always motivate us to do more and accomplish the goal. To make a goal measurable, ask yourself:

  1. How many/much?
  2. How do I know if I have reached my goal?
  3. What is my indicator of progress?

3.Achievable

A goal becomes smart when it is achievable and attainable. This will help you to figure out the ways that you need to take to accomplish it. But the achievability of a goal should make you feel challenged, but defined well enough that you can actually achieve it. Ask yourself:

  1. Do I have the resources and capabilities to achieve the goal? If not, what am I missing?
  2. Have others done it successfully before?

4. Realistic

A goal is setting to achieve with available resources and time. A SMART goal is likely realistic if you believe that it can be accomplished. Ask yourself:

  1. Is the goal realistic and within my reach?
  2. Is the goal reachable to me, given the time and resources?
  3. Am I able to commit to achieving the goal?

5. Timely

A SMART goal must be time-bound in that it has a start and finish date. If the goal is not time-constrained, there will be no sense of urgency and, therefore, less motivation to achieve the goal. Ask yourself:

  1. Does my goal have a deadline?
  2. By when do I want to achieve my goal?
